Promoting the health & well being of African women & their families in Minnesota

AFRICAN WOMEN IN THE DIASPORA CONFERENCE 2006:
Empowering African Women, Ensuring Africa’s Future
June 22, 2006, Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

Keynote Speakers: Judge Beatrice Ntuba & Prosecutor Vera Ngassa, of the Award-winning documentary, Sisters In Law

CALL FOR PAPERS & PRESENTATIONS – due May 5, 2006

About the Conference: In the wake of a first African woman president, a first African female Nobel Prize winner, and a 2005 award winning documentary featuring 2 African women jurists at their jobs, the Planning Committee of the African Women in the Diaspora Conference believe it is time to examine and promote the empowerment of African women in very practical terms in light of the impact this has on the development and advancement of the African continent. We recognize the fact that this is a task for all – African and non-African, living in Africa or in the Diaspora. Hence this conference is open to all, and because of the global nature of African women’s issues, we expect lessons learned here to be applicable to women in all cultures.

This conference straddles both the academic and social service arenas. While we are interested in learning what academic research has to offer, we also need to know practical ways of applying this in working with African women, youth and families.

Presenting at the Conference

We encourage a wide variety of papers and presentations which will be incorporated into the program under this year’s theme of Empowering African Women, Ensuring Africa’s Future. Some sub-themes are: African Women and Leadership: Gender, Culture, and the Diaspora; Working within the culture to effect change in the African communities; HIV & AIDS in the young African community; Sexual exploitation of young African women; Domestic violence; How African immigrant families are being reshaped and/or maintaining continuity living abroad; Parenting in the African community; Role of Men in the Welfare of the African family; Trafficking within the African communities in the diaspora - forced labor, indentured servitude, child prostitution, etc.

All proposals must be in English. Presentations at the conference will be in the form of brief papers (15 minutes long), panels (90 minutes for 3-4 panelists) and best practices and case studies. Presentations will be accepted on the basis of the proposal. These must be submitted electronically preferably as attachments in Word format. The conference organisers may approach proposal writers to request changes in their proposals to better fit conference needs. Presenters should register for the conference as paying participants. No compensation is possible. Abstracts will be published in the conference abstract book and papers will be published in the Proceedings journal. Presenters must register by June 2, 2006 or their presentation will be removed from the program.
